Dr. Leen Aerts is an obstetrician-gynecologist. She obtained a Master in Sexology at the University of Leuven in Belgium. She is a specialist certified in Psychosomatic and Psychosocial Medicine (AFC ASMPP).

She was as a Staff Member at the Department of Gynecology of the University Hospitals Leuven in Belgium where she worked for many years in a multidisciplinary clinic for female sexual dysfunctions.

She obtained a PhD in Biomedical Sciences in 2014. The topic of  her PhD research project was the sexual well-being of women after a surgical treatment for a gynecological cancer or breast cancer. Her promotor was Prof. Dr. Frédéric Amant.

From 2014 to 2016 she had a post-doctoral research position in the “Female Sexual Health” laboratory of Prof. Sophie Bergeron at the University of Montréal in Canada. She collaborated in several multidisciplinary research projects on chronic genital pain and worked together with sexual health and vulva specialists in Canada and the United-States.

From 2016 to 2022 she has been working in the Geneva University Hospitals in Switzerland as a staff member at the Department of Gynecology. She was responsible for the outpatient clinic for women with female  sexual dysfunctions, vulvar pathology and chronic genital pain. She also worked in the endometriosis center and in the clinic for women with female genital mutilation.

In September 2022 she started her private clinic for ‘Sexual Medicine, Vulvar pathology and Chronic genital pain’ in Geneva. In September 2023 she also opened a clinic in Belgium. She currently has a practice in Mechelen and works at Mirha Pelvic Care in Zaventem and at the University Hospitals in Leuven.

 

Based on her scientific knowledge and clinical experience in the field she underscores the importance of a multidisciplinary approach and an holistic patient care adapted to the patient’s or couple’s current situation.

In addition to her clinical work she engages in the promotion of sexual health as the President Elect of the Swiss Society of Sexology.  She is member of the International Society for the Study of Vulvovaginal Disease (ISSVD), the International Society for the Study of Women’s Sexual Health (ISSWSH), the International Society for Sexual Medicine (ISSM), the European Society for Sexual Medicine (ESSM), the Flemish Society for Obstetrics and Gynecology (VVOG) and the Flemish Society for Sexology (VVS).

She teaches students and other health care providers and performs research to better understand complex female gynecological pathologies and treatments. She is a frequent invited speaker on women’s sexual health, chronic pain and vulvar diseases and appears regularly on radio shows and in magazines.
